Functional Medicine Strategies for Mold Illness & Toxic Exposures
A Functional Medicine Approach to Mold Illness
We help patients uncover and address the root causes driving mold-related illness, chronic inflammation, fatigue, neurological symptoms, hormone imbalances, and unexplained health challenges.
We Understand How Frustrating Mold Illness Can Be
When your symptoms don’t make sense, your environment may hold the missing piece.
Many patients come to us after seeing multiple providers, trying countless supplements, changing their diet, and doing everything they can think of to improve their health.
Yet they still don’t feel better.
In some cases, the missing piece isn’t another medication, supplement, or protocol.
Sometimes it’s what the body is being exposed to every single day.
Mold illness is often overlooked because it doesn’t always present with obvious symptoms. While many people associate mold exposure with respiratory issues, mold can impact virtually every system in the body.
Our team understands how devastating and confusing mold-related illness can be because we’ve seen it clinically and experienced it personally.
You May Be Dealing With:
- Chronic fatigue
- Brain fog
- Headaches and migraines
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Food sensitivities
- Digestive issues
- IBS
- Hormone imbalances
- Chronic inflammation
- Joint pain
- Muscle pain
- Neurological symptoms
- Dizziness
- POTS and dysautonomia
- Chronic sinus issues
- Allergy symptoms
- Unexplained symptoms despite normal testing
Related conditions may include:
- Chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS)
- Mold toxicity
- Mycotoxin illness
- Environmental illness
- Histamine intolerance
- Mast cell activation symptoms
- Autoimmune conditions
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
Why Mold Illness Is Often Missed
One of the challenges with mold exposure is that no two people respond the same way.
Two people living in the same home can experience completely different symptoms, different severity, and different timelines for when symptoms appear.
Many people assume they would know if mold was present in their environment.
Unfortunately, that isn’t always true.
Mold can hide behind walls, beneath flooring, inside HVAC systems, crawl spaces, furniture, mattresses, and areas of previous water damage. Sometimes there are no obvious warning signs.
This is one reason mold-related illness is frequently overlooked.
Get to the Root Cause with Functional Medicine
Our process begins with a comprehensive review of your health history, symptom timeline, environmental exposures, lifestyle factors, and overall health picture.
We may investigate:
- Mold and mycotoxin exposure
- Gut health and microbial balance
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Chronic inflammation
- Immune dysfunction
- Nervous system dysregulation
- Hormone imbalances
- Toxin burden
- Stress response and cortisol patterns
When appropriate, testing may include urine mycotoxin testing and other functional medicine investigations.
If mold exposure is identified, one of the most important steps is addressing the source of exposure whenever possible.
From there, we help support the body’s natural healing processes through personalized nutrition, lifestyle interventions, gut restoration, detoxification support, and individualized care plans.
Why Conventional Care Often Falls Short
Conventional medicine is often designed to identify disease and manage symptoms.
Functional medicine asks a different question:
Why is the body reacting this way in the first place?
When symptoms seem disconnected or don’t fit neatly into a diagnosis, environmental factors can be an important part of the investigation.
Instead of focusing only on symptom management, we work to identify and address the factors that may be contributing to ongoing dysfunction.
Our Goal
Patients often come to us feeling:
- exhausted
- dismissed
- confused
- overwhelmed
- stuck
Our goal is to help you:
- identify potential root causes
- understand what may be contributing to your symptoms
- create a clear plan for recovery
- restore energy and resilience
- support long-term healing
Healing from mold illness takes time, but improvement is possible when the right factors are identified and addressed.

Step 2 – Schedule a first step medical investigation.
Schedule a first step appointment with a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner ($300).
Step 3 – Invest in the recommended 2 month package.
Why a two month package? We can help you make substantial improvements to your health in that amount of time. Many patients see complete resolution of their issues and most see substantial improvements by the end of two months. At the end of the two months you will be left with a detailed plan to either continue on your own or with guidance from the appropriate member(s) of our team. One of our main goals during this two month timeframe is to empower you with the knowledge to take charge of your health.
Dr. Beard will guide you to the proper package that will best meet your medical needs and financial ability. There is no one-size-fits-all plan; we customize your treatment plan for your unique needs.
What to expect at your first step medical investigation:
An in-depth medical investigation
with an experienced medical doctor who leaves no stone unturned.
A medical, lifestyle and symptom timeline
from birth to present.
Evaluation and assessment
of medication side effects, surgical & procedural impacts
In-depth evaluation
of diet and nutrient intake, gut health, toxin exposures and toxic burden, sleep hygiene and quality, sun exposure and biological rhythms, movement and exercise, mitochondrial function, nervous system status, detox and drainage status.
Discussion of next step
(may include but not limited to): specialty and standard lab testing, protocols, medication weaning and changes, supplement changes, referrals to other specialists (biological dentists, for example)
Plenty of time
for concerns and questions to be addressed.
2 Month Treatment Packages:
Option 1:
First Step medical investigation + four RN functional medicine practitioner visits
$975
At the end of two months you will be provided with a care plan to continue on your own or with the help of the appropriate clinic member.
Option:2
First Step medical investigation + four RN functional medicine practitioner visits with Dr. Beard’s oversight $1375
This is the most cost effective way to involve Dr. Beard in your care. Dr. Beard and your RN practitioner meet frequently to discuss your case and direct your care as warranted.
At the end of the two months you will be provided with a care plan to continue on your own or with the help of the appropriate clinic member.
Additional Costs & Options:
- 30-minute appointments with Dr. Beard can be added at anytime for $250
- 40-minute appointments with RN Functional Medicine Practitioner (outside of 2 month package) $125
- Specialty and standard labs: we do not mark up the cost of labs in an effort to save you money. Dr. Beard takes a conservative approach to ordering labs, but also understands their importance in certain clinical situations.
$50-$300 per test panel - Protocols: many patients are prescribed protocols during their two month treatment plan according to their needs. $300-$600 per protocol
We try VERY hard to keep our services affordable. Even though Dr. Beard is one of the most credentialed and experienced functional medicine doctors in the country, she charges less because this is her personal ministry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can mold exposure cause symptoms outside of allergies and respiratory issues?
Yes. Mold-related illness can impact multiple body systems and may contribute to fatigue, brain fog, hormone imbalances, digestive symptoms, mood changes, neurological symptoms, and chronic inflammation.
How do I know if mold is affecting my health?
Many people don’t realize mold exposure may be contributing to their symptoms. A detailed health history, symptom timeline, environmental investigation, and appropriate testing can help identify potential concerns.
Can functional medicine test for mold exposure?
When appropriate, we may utilize urine mycotoxin testing and other functional medicine tools to better understand potential environmental exposures.
Do I need to detox for years to recover from mold illness?
Not necessarily. Every case is different. Our goal is to create an individualized plan that supports healing without unnecessary interventions.
Can mold illness be treated virtually?
Yes. Many aspects of functional medicine care and mold-related investigations can be completed through virtual visits.
