Functional Medicine Strategies for Alpha-Gal Syndrome

A Functional Medicine Approach to Alpha-Gal Syndrome

When food suddenly feels unsafe, we help you find clarity, confidence, and a path forward.

We’ve Been There

Alpha-Gal Syndrome isn’t just about avoiding certain foods.
For many people, it changes the way they think about eating, socializing, traveling, shopping, and even sleeping.

The constant worry about accidental exposure, unexplained symptoms, and delayed reactions can leave people feeling overwhelmed, isolated, and fearful.

Our team understands these challenges on a personal level.
Dr. Amy’s own Alpha-Gal journey began after months of unexplained anxiety, insomnia, and nighttime panic episodes before she finally connected the dots and received a diagnosis. Through personal experience and years of working with Alpha-Gal patients, she understands how frustrating and life-altering this condition can be.

Most importantly, she understands that healing is possible.

You May Be Dealing With:

  • Nighttime anxiety or panic attacks
  • Insomnia
  • Itching
  • Hives
  • Digestive issues
  • Heartburn
  • Food sensitivities
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Joint pain
  • Poor sleep
  • Histamine reactions
  • Mast cell symptoms
  • Unexplained reactions after eating
  • Fear around food
  • Anxiety surrounding accidental exposures

Related conditions and concerns may include:

  • Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS)
  • Histamine intolerance
  • Mast cell activation symptoms
  • Food allergies
  • Immune dysfunction
  • Gut dysbiosis
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Post-tick bite illness

What is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Alpha-Gal Syndrome is an allergy to a sugar molecule called alpha-gal that is found in mammalian products.

While many people think of Alpha-Gal as a meat allergy, it often goes much deeper than that.

Mammalian ingredients can be hidden in foods, supplements, medications, personal care products, and everyday items that many people never think to investigate.

Because reactions are often delayed, symptoms can feel confusing and difficult to connect back to specific triggers.

Why Conventional Care Often Falls Short

Conventional medicine often focuses on identifying the allergy and teaching avoidance.

While avoidance is important, many patients still have unanswered questions:

  • Why are symptoms so severe?
  • Why do some people recover while others continue to struggle?
  • Why did this happen in the first place?
  • What can I do to support my body’s recovery?

Functional medicine asks a different question:

How can we support the body’s immune system, nervous system, gut health, and overall resilience while navigating Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Get to the Root Cause with Functional Medicine

Every patient is unique.

Some individuals recover relatively quickly, while others continue to experience symptoms for years.

Our goal is to help identify and address factors that may be affecting recovery and immune function.

We may investigate:

  • Gut health and microbial balance
  • Food sensitivities
  • Immune dysfunction
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Histamine burden
  • Mast cell activation
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Environmental toxin exposure
  • Mold exposure
  • Nervous system dysregulation
  • Nhronic stress

Care may include:

  • Nutrition support
  • Alpha-Gal-friendly supplement guidance
  • Gut restoration strategies
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Inflammation support
  • Lifestyle medicine
  • Personalized health plans

The Part No One Talks About

One of the most challenging aspects of Alpha-Gal Syndrome is the emotional burden.

Many patients live in a constant state of hypervigilance.

They’re afraid of eating the wrong thing.

They’re worried about traveling.

They’re anxious about social events.

They’re exhausted from reading labels and researching ingredients.

Unfortunately, chronic stress can increase histamine release, inflammation, and immune dysregulation, creating a cycle that may worsen symptoms.

Healing requires more than avoiding triggers.

It also requires creating safety, calm, resilience, and confidence.

Our Goal

Patients often come to us feeling:

  • Scared
  • Confused
  • Isolated

Our goal is to help you:

Step 1 – Schedule a free 15 minute Exploratory Call

Schedule a free 15 minute Exploratory Call with our patient liaison to make sure we are a good fit for your care and learn about how our functional medicine clinic operates. After your Exploratory Call, you will be sent a link to schedule your First Step Appointment either with Dr. Beard or Dr. Kinard. Regardless of who you see, Dr. Beard always oversees all cases in our practice.

Step 2 – Schedule a first step medical investigation.

Schedule a first step appointment with a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner ($300).

Step 3 – Invest in the recommended 2 month package.

Why a two month package? We can help you make substantial improvements to your health in that amount of time. Many patients see complete resolution of their issues and most see substantial improvements by the end of two months. At the end of the two months you will be left with a detailed plan to either continue on your own or with guidance from the appropriate member(s) of our team. One of our main goals during this two month timeframe is to empower you with the knowledge to take charge of your health.

Dr. Beard will guide you to the proper package that will best meet your medical needs and financial ability. There is no one-size-fits-all plan; we customize your treatment plan for your unique needs.

What to expect at your first step medical investigation:

An in-depth medical investigation

with an experienced medical doctor who leaves no stone unturned.

A medical, lifestyle and symptom timeline

from birth to present.

Evaluation and assessment

of medication side effects, surgical & procedural impacts

In-depth evaluation

of diet and nutrient intake, gut health, toxin exposures and toxic burden, sleep hygiene and quality, sun exposure and biological rhythms, movement and exercise, mitochondrial function, nervous system status, detox and drainage status.

Discussion of next step

(may include but not limited to): specialty and standard lab testing, protocols, medication weaning and changes, supplement changes, referrals to other specialists (biological dentists, for example)

Plenty of time

for concerns and questions to be addressed.

2 Month Treatment Packages:

Option 1:

First Step medical investigation + four RN functional medicine practitioner visits
$975

At the end of two months you will be provided with a care plan to continue on your own or with the help of the appropriate clinic member.

Option:2

First Step medical investigation + four RN functional medicine practitioner visits with Dr. Beard’s oversight $1375

This is the most cost effective way to involve Dr. Beard in your care. Dr. Beard and your RN practitioner meet frequently to discuss your case and direct your care as warranted.

At the end of the two months you will be provided with a care plan to continue on your own or with the help of the appropriate clinic member.

Additional Costs & Options:

  • 30-minute appointments with Dr. Beard can be added at anytime for $250
  • 40-minute appointments with RN Functional Medicine Practitioner (outside of 2 month package) $125
  • Specialty and standard labs: we do not mark up the cost of labs in an effort to save you money. Dr. Beard takes a conservative approach to ordering labs, but also understands their importance in certain clinical situations.
    $50-$300 per test panel
  • Protocols: many patients are prescribed protocols during their two month treatment plan according to their needs. $300-$600 per protocol

We try VERY hard to keep our services affordable. Even though Dr. Beard is one of the most credentialed and experienced functional medicine doctors in the country, she charges less because this is her personal ministry.
